Skilled Regional Provisional Visa (Subclass 489)

If you are seeking a temporary Australian visa for up to 4 years, this visa allows you to work and live in low populated regions of Australia. After two years of holding subclass 489, the applicant becomes eligible to apply for a permanent skilled regional visa (subclass 887), provided, he/she should meet the requirements.
Following are the three ways to apply for the Skilled Regional Provisional Visa (Subclass 489)

489 Visa Extended Stay Pathway

If you currently possess a subclass 475, 487, 489, 495 or 496 visas, you are eligible for this pathway provided you have never held more than one of these visas.

Requirements to comply:

You need to hold any one of the following mentioned visas and comply with all the prescribed requirements for the period of two years:
  • Skilled Regional Sponsored Visa (subclass 475)
  • Skilled Regional Sponsored Visa (subclass 487)
  • Skilled Regional Sponsored visa (subclass 495)
  • Skilled Regional Sponsored visa (subclass 496)
It is important that the applicant must not be the holder of more than one aforesaid visas.

489 Visa invited Pathway

You need to submit an expression of interest and should be nominated by Australian territory or state government agency to procure the Skilled regional Provisional Visa. Alternatively, an eligible relative living in Australia can sponsor you, if living in the designated area as prescribed.

Requirements to comply:

  • You must be either sponsored by an eligible relative or nominated by the Australian State or Territory to work and live.
  • You must of 45 years of age at the time of invitation.
  • If you are sponsored or nominated, your occupation category must comply with the prescribed list of eligible skilled occupations.
  • You must score 65 points as pass test marks.
  • You must possess competent English skills.
  • You must clear the skill assessment to evident that you have desired skill and qualifications to work in the intended occupation.

489 Visa Subsequent Entry Pathway

If you are a family member of a unit who is already holding the subclass 475, 487, 489, 495 or 496 visa, this pathway is applicable for you. You can be in or away from Australia when the visa is applied and when the decision is declared.

The member of your unit must be the holder of any one of the visa mentioned below:

  • Skilled—Regional Sponsored visa (subclass 475)
  • Skilled Regional Sponsored Visa (subclass 487)
  • Skilled Regional Provisional Visa(subclass 489)
  • Skilled—Independent Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 495)
  • Skilled—Designated Area Sponsored visa (subclass 496).
Under this visa category, the applicant is exempted from the competent English skill requirements. If you do not have functional English and are above 18 years of age, you need to submit an additional fee as a second instalment. Before applying for a visa, the test to evident competent English must be undertaken within 12 months. However, this test can be completed during the processing of the application process.
